The Gulf of Corinth is a deep, semi-enclosed basin separating the Peloponnese from mainland Greece.
The northern shores of the Gulf are particularly pristine. Transparent waters frame sceneries of stunning beauty pointed by the heritage of a glorious culture.
To a marine biologist, the Gulf of Corinth represents a natural laboratory where a range of marine animals can be observed and studied from small boats. While the western part of the Gulf is relatively shallow, its central portion has waters 500–900 m deep, offering a suitable habitat for marine species that are normally found offshore.
Galaxidi
This picturesque village is a nautical city that has resisted attacks from Franks, Catalans, Knights of Rhodes and Turkish pirates during its long and turbulent history. In the age of sail (up to late 19th century) it was a major nautical force and had a large merchant fleet. Wealth accumulated during that time is reflected in the style of local architecture.
Today, Galaxidi (pronounce: Gah-lah-xee-dee) is one of the most attractive villages in Greece, and yet it is relatively untouched by mass tourism. Places to visit include the church of Agios Nikolaos with its splendid wooden temple, and the Nautical Historical Museum.
Galaxidi has well-preserved traditional houses and buildings, beaches with crystal green-blue waters, an adjacent forest in which to walk and hike, and a small port used by small fishing boats and yachts, encircled by restaurants and bars.
The farmers markets of Galaxidi, as well as that of the nearby Itea, are lively and brightly-coloured events that one shouldn't miss.
